What Is A URL

The Universal Resource Locator (URL) also known as Domain Name is a unique character string (name) that is assigned and registered (for a fee) with the Internet Information Center (InterNIC). It requires a search of the database to find if the name is already in use; if not then the name can be registered. If it is in use, a new name or variation must be submitted until a unique character string is found.

The domain name is unique and can give your company or organization an identity on the Internet. You can use this name for your website, for Email and for FTP. The most popular and easily remembered domain names (i.e. sony.com, intel.com, ford.com) are being reserved daily, at a rate of over 100,000 per month!

Wouldn't you have your customers find you on the net like this;

http://www.yourcompany.com

rather than this

http://www.serviceprovider.com/yourcompany
